Sámara and Puerto Carrillo are perfect for slow beach days, but they’re also a great launch point for short adventures. Within 20–90 minutes of your vacation home you can find waterfalls, turtle nesting beaches, jungle rivers, caves, and quiet local towns that most visitors never see.
Here are some of the best day trips and half-day outings you can plan from our homes in Sámara, Puerto Carrillo, and Cuesta Grande.
1. Kayak & Snorkel at Isla Chora
Time from Sámara: Tour departs directly from Sámara Beach
One of the classic Sámara experiences is a kayak trip out to Isla Chora, the small island you see just offshore. Guided tours launch from the main beach, paddle across calm water, and land on a tiny white-sand cove where you can snorkel, swim, and relax.Hotel Giada+3Samara Sea Tours+3samaraadventures.com+3
Why go:
-
Easy, family-friendly adventure
-
Great views back toward Sámara and the coast
-
Chance to see fish, rays, and other marine life
Good for: Active families, couples, and anyone comfortable in the water.
2. Belen Waterfall – Local Swimming Hole
Approx. drive: ~20 minutes from Sámara, inland toward Nicoya
Tucked just off the main road toward Nicoya, Belen Waterfall (Catarata Belén) is a low-key local spot where the river carves out pools and smooth rock ledges. In the dry season, people come here to sit in the pools, cool off, and enjoy the countryside scenery.Tripadvisor+2Two Weeks in Costa Rica+2
Why go:
-
Short, easy walk from the parking area
-
Natural rock pools for swimming (conditions vary by season and rainfall)
-
A quick taste of rural Costa Rica outside the beach towns
Tips:
-
Go with sturdy sandals or shoes that can get wet.
-
Water levels change with the seasons; always check conditions and use common sense.
3. Night Turtle Tours – Camaronal & Nearby Beaches
Approx. drive: 30–45 minutes, depending on the beach used for the tour
From Sámara or Carrillo you can join a night turtle nesting tour to beaches like Camaronal Wildlife Refuge, where several species of sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs, mainly in the second half of the year.entercostarica.com+2Carrillo Tours+2
Guides provide red lights, explain the turtle life cycle, and lead you along the sand while you watch – quietly and respectfully – as turtles dig nests, lay eggs, and sometimes see hatchlings making their way to the ocean.
Why go:
-
A genuinely unforgettable wildlife experience
-
Great for older kids and adults who don’t mind a late night
Tips:
-
Wear dark clothing and closed-toe shoes.
-
Plan this for a night when you don’t have an early morning tour the next day.
4. Playa Carrillo & Hidden Beaches South
Approx. drive: 10–15 minutes from Sámara
Playa Carrillo is close enough to be your everyday beach, but it also works beautifully as a low-effort “day trip”: load up a cooler, grab snacks, and spend hours under the palm trees on one of Costa Rica’s prettiest bays. The water is usually calm enough for swimming and floating, and there are no big buildings on the sand, just the road, picnic areas, and shade.Costa Rica Vibes+2samaraadventures.com+2
If you’re up for more exploring, small, less-visited beaches lie farther south along the coast and can be worked into a scenic drive.
Why go:
-
Easy, low-stress beach day
-
Great for picnics, families, and sunset walks
5. Barra Honda National Park – Caves & Views
Approx. drive: About 1.5–2 hours from Sámara, inland near Nicoya
For something very different from the beach, consider a trip to Barra Honda National Park, where the main attraction is a network of limestone caves set in a forested hillside. With a guide, you can hike to viewpoints and descend into a selected cavern using sturdy ladders and safety gear.COSTA RICA Nicoya Peninsula+1
Why go:
-
Unique cave experience not found in most Costa Rica parks
-
Panoramic views over the Nicoya region
-
Good mix of hiking, geology, and nature
Good for: Adventurous adults and teens who are comfortable with physical activity and heights.
6. Ostional Wildlife Refuge (Seasonal Turtle Arribadas)
Approx. drive: 1.5–2 hours north of Sámara (timing & access vary)
If your trip lines up just right, you may be able to plan a longer outing to Ostional Wildlife Refuge during an arribada – a mass nesting event where thousands of Olive Ridley turtles come ashore within a few days. These events don’t follow a tourist schedule, so you’ll need current info from local tour operators or guides.Reddit+1
Even outside the big events, Ostional and nearby beaches can host smaller but still impressive nesting nights.
Why go:
-
One of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Costa Rica when conditions line up
-
Combines well with exploring the Nosara area
7. Wetlands & Wildlife Boat Tours
Approx. drive: Varies by river/wetland; often 1.5–2 hours with tour pick-up
Several operators in Sámara offer day trips to nearby wetlands and rivers, where you board a small boat and cruise through mangroves and marshes looking for birds, monkeys, crocodiles, and other wildlife. In this region, tours often visit sections of the Tempisque River/Palo Verde area or other protected wetlands.samaraadventures.com+1
Why go:
-
Cooler than a mid-day hike thanks to the breeze on the water
-
Easy wildlife viewing without much walking
-
Good for multigenerational groups
8. Big-Day Adventure: Volcanoes & Hot Springs
Approx. drive: 3–4 hours one way (often organized as a full guided day tour)
If you’re willing to trade one longer travel day for a “bucket list” experience, you’ll find guided day trips from Sámara to volcanic areas like Arenal or Rincón de la Vieja. These trips usually bundle several experiences into one long day: rainforest hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, maybe ziplining or a hanging bridge walk.samaraadventures.com+1
Why go:
-
Classic Costa Rica volcano scenery in a single day
-
Hot springs soak after your activities
Good for: Guests with limited time in the country who still want a taste of the volcano side without changing hotels.
How To Choose The Right Day Trip
When you’re staying in Sámara, Puerto Carrillo, or Cuesta Grande, a good rule of thumb is:
-
Half-day: Isla Chora, Belen Waterfall, Playa Carrillo, short wildlife or horseback tours.
-
Easy full day: Turtle tours (late night but little driving), Barra Honda, wetlands boat tours.
-
Big full day: Volcano & hot springs trips or long-range adventures organized with a tour company.
Think about your group’s energy level, kids’ ages, and how much time you want in the car, then pick 1–3 outings to sprinkle into a week-long stay.
